Afghanistan is regarded as one of the most mine-affected countries in the world. Accidents related to landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) remain common, and with inadequate medical services in a nation emerging from over 20 years conflict, there are many persons with disabilities resulting from both injury and disease. While the country has been making steps toward recovery, the government is still unable to offer assistance to persons with disabilities. AAR JAPAN has been carrying out mine action efforts here since the opening of our Kabul office in January 2002.
To educate people on how to avoid the risks of landmines, AAR JAPAN has been developing MRE learning materials that can be used all over the country. Ever year, we educate approximately 50,000 people about the dangers of landmines, making and distributing hundreds of thousands of materials such as pamphlets, and showing short films in each village. AAR JAPAN also broadcasts a program on the national radio network, and is in the process of developing a TV drama as well.
