Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR JAPAN)
published the picture book called "Not Mines, but Flowers" on September
1996, and the series of this picture book have become the campaign literature
to rid
of mines.
AAR JAPAN supports not only mine clearance but also the victims of landmines
and conducts
Mine Risk Education.
AAR JAPAN is also a member of the "Zero Landmine Campaign Committee", together
with Tokyo Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS), Warner Music Japan, and Nichion,
AAR JAPAN
has been
supporting mine clearance programs in Cambodia, Mozambique, Georgia and Angola
since April, 2001. |

AAR
JAPAN has provided education to avoid mines in Afghanistan and Zambia, for
the people
in mine-affected areas to live in safety. |

| Skills Training for
Landmine Victims |
| In Cambodia and Myanmar, AAR JAPAN operates
vocational training centers for skills development of people with disabilities
including
landmine victims. |

| Advocacy to Ban Landmines |
AAR JAPAN's advocacy work for landmine issues
started
in 1996 when a picture book of "Not Mines, but Flowers" was published.
The best-selling series of the picture books, together with various conferences
and lecture sessions through out Japan, played a significant role in raising
awareness
on landmine issues among the Japanese society. Advocacy by civil society led
by AAR JAPAN and other partners to ban landmines contributed to the ratification
of the
Convention on Antipersonnel Mines (Mine Ban Treaty) by the Japanese government
in 1998.
AAR JAPAN is a member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) that
was
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997. |

| Mine Clearance |
Cooperating
with The Halo Trust, a British NGO, AAR JAPAN has been supporting mine clearance
operations
in Afghanistan since 1995. Since 2001, AAR JAPAN has also supported mine clearance
programs in Cambodia, Mozambique, Georgia and Angola since 2001 as a part
of "TBS Zero
Landmine Campaign. " |
