AAR JAPAN engaged in aid and relief efforts for people affected by the 2005 Kashmir Earthquake in northern Pakistan. Since the end of April in 2009, AAR JAPAN has also been supporting internally displaced persons who have been driven from their homes due to deteriorating security, as well as people affected by the 2010 Pakistan floods. Starting in May 2011, AAR JAPAN has expanded its support to include Afghan refugees and the host communities who accept them.

Assistance for Internally Displaced Persons and Afghan Refugees

In the northern and western Pakistan, military crackdowns on anti-government protests have led to an increase in internal displacement, with refugees from Afghanistan adding to the number of people living as evacuees. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, northwestern Pakistan, AAR JAPAN has been supporting reconstruction and the maintenance of elementary schools, building wells, and providing medical equipment for hospitals in order to improve the living environment of internally displaced persons, Afghan refugees, and the residents of the host communities themselves.

Assistance for People Affected by Flooding (Jul 2010-June 2011)

After the Pakistan floods of July 2010, AAR JAPAN dispatched an emergency relief team to distribute relief supplies, as well as to provide basic medical services to survivors. Thanks to the generous contributions of our supporters this effort concluded successfully in June 2011.

Assistance for People Affected by the Kashmir Earthquake (2005-2010)

Two days after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake rocked northern Pakistan on October 8th, 2005, AAR JAPAN dispatched staff to distribute emergency relief supplies to survivors and support the recovery of water facilities. Thanks to the generous contributions of our supporters, this effort concluded successfully in May 2010..

Emergency Assistance for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)(2009)

At the end of April in 2009, government troops began a crackdown on anti-government protests in northern Pakistan. The resulting deterioration in security forced people to the south, away from the region of conflict. While local clinics were still in the process of recovering from damage incurred in the fighting, AAR JAPAN established a temporary clinic and provided free medical services for IDPs and those who had returned to their homes from September to November 2009. We are thankful for all the generous support that enabled us to carry out these efforts.
