Projects and Activities in Sudan

In January 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed between North and South Sudan, bringing to an end 21 years of civil war that had caused over 2 million deaths and sent an estimated 550,000 people fleeing to neighboring countries, with an estimated 4 million displaced internally. In July in 2011, the 10 southern provinces of Sudan became an independent nation, forming the Republic of South Sudan.

Water Provision and Sanitation
Collecting water is an important task for children as well.

AAR has been building wells and water towers near Kapoeta City in South Sudan, as well as organizing water management committees and giving training to the mechanics to ensure that the local people can maintain the wells and water towers independent of international aid.

AAR JAPAN has also been encouraging improvement of sanitation conditions, including the use of sanitary toilet facilities and the regular washing of hands. While respecting the local culture, AAR JAPAN has secured the cooperation of residents in the construction and ongoing maintenance of sanitary toilet facilities.
