On 26 December 2004,
the coastal
areas of Sri Lanka were devastated by the Tsunami
triggered by the Indian Ocean earthquake. The disaster claimed over 30,000
lives and 100,000 houses in only about 20 minutes (figures as of 1 February
2005). AAR JAPAN initiated emergency relief operations only two days after
the tsunami
struck, and opened the AAR JAPAN Colombo office in April 2005 to meet the
changing demands of the people affected in Sri Lanka. Our operation was completely
fulfilled by the end of August 2006 and the projects had been handed over
to the relevant institutions.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE
Distribution
of Emergency Supplies (December 2004 to March 2005) |
As
early as two days after the tsunami struck, AAR JAPAN had dispatched two members
of staff to Sri Lanka to coordinate the emergency relief activities. We distributed
emergency relief supplies in the Galle District in cooperation with a local
NGO from December to February 2005. The initial relief operation included the
distribution of cookies, soap, underwear, mats, etc. Two weeks after the tsunami,
as the second stage of the operation, we provided 3,000 families with
kitchen utensils and 2,200 children with stationeries and sports equipment.
In March 2005, to evaluate the effectiveness of the emergency assistance provided
to the people affected by the tsunami, we conducted a monitoring and evaluation
of our emergency assistance. |

Housing Construction (April 2005 to August 2006) |
AAR
JAPAN built permanent houses for 30 families, depending on the economic
status of the families affected and the degree of damage to their houses,
in Habaraduwa Division, Galle District, South Province. Along with the
permanent housing project, AAR JAPAN had also constructed a community
centre, a playground, and infrastructure such
as water supply
system and internal roads, and
assisted community mobilization and psychosocial activities, in coordination
with International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Green Movement
of Sri Lanka (GMSL), a
local NGO. The project was successfully completed by the end of August
2006. |

| Livelihood Recovery:
Assistance to Fishing Communities (August 2005) |
As
part of the Livelihood Recovery Programme in cooperation with GMSL, AAR
JAPAN provided assistance to fishing communities in Sri Lanka. The program
consisted of two main activities: repairing the cooperative
building for fishermen and providing necessary equipment (nets, gear,
galvanized pipes, and wooden stilts) for stilt fishermen who are engaged
in traditional fishing. As part of the building repairs, a toilet and
a well were installed to improve the sanitary conditions. AAR JAPAN successfully
completed the assistance to the fishing communities on 31 August 2005. |
