Projects and Activities in Sudan

In January 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed between North and South Sudan, bringing to an end 21 years of civil war that had caused over 2 million deaths and sent an estimated 550,000 people fleeing to neighboring countries, with an estimated 4 million displaced internally.

AAR JAPAN is helping Sudanese refugees and internally displaced persons return to their homes, as well as offering aid to those who remain in their own war-ravaged towns.

Mine Risk Education (MRE)
Learning about mines through pictures C: MAG

Many returnees and surviving residents continue to fall victim to the landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) that have been left behind in the wake of decades of civil war. In the short-term, effective education is the best way to protect these people from the dangers of landmines and UXO.

Building on our experience in Angola and Afghanistan, and in cooperation with UN organizations and NGOs working locally to carry out MRE activities, AAR JAPAN has developed materials that present MRE information in a way that is easily understood and suitable to the needs of the local people. AAR JAPAN has been visiting villages and returnee centers to offer MRE in Southern Kordofan Province.
