Projects and Activities in Sudan
In January 2005, a 21 year-old civil war came to an end after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Over 2 million lived are estimated to have been lost, 500,000 people became refugees, and additional 4 million were displaced in their own country during the civil war. AAR JAPAN has been engaged in the following activities to ensure the safe return of the displaced and to support rehabilitation of communities destroyed by the war.
Mine Risk Education
Learning about mines through pictures C: MAGResidents and refugees continue to fall victim to the landmines and unexploded ordonances (UXO) from the civil war. Promoting landmine awareness is essential in preventing landmine-related casualties, but there is still no teaching material which has given due consideration to Sudanese culture and customs. Utilizing the experience in Yugoslavia and Afghanistan and in cooperation with UN organizations and NGOs working locally to prevent landmine accidents, AAR JAPAN has been putting together educational material which meets the needs of the Sudanese people.

Knowledge on landmines is vital in preventing landmine-related accidents.
Water Supply and Hygiene
Fetching water is an important chore for children. In southern Sudan, we have been engaged in constructing wells and community water supply systems, in order to provide clean and safe water for people in Eastern Equatoria State, Sudan-Kenya border area. We have also organized trainings for Village Water Management Committee members and hand-pump mechanics so that the wells could be well managed and maintained by local people.
Promoting the use of latrines and hygiene practices has also been an important part of our project. We have, thus, been encouraging voluntary participation of local people in the construction and maintenance of latrines, by providing digging tools and practical advices.

In 2008, this project is supported by donations from the general public and subsidies from the Government of Japan and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Malaria Prevention
Protecting children and pregnant women from malariaMalaria is the most common disease seen at the clinic in Kapoeta. As a preventive measure targeting children and pregnant women, AAR JAPAN is organizing educational sessions on malaria and distribution of mosquito nets.

For children and pregnant women, because of their lower resistance, malaria is a life-threatening disease. Correct understanding of the disease and the use of mosquito nets can help prevent infection.
