Bangladesh

Since late August 2017, when an armed group of Islamic militants started to engage in conflicts with Burmese security forces in the Lakhaine State of Myanmar, large numbers of refugees have fled into neighboring Bangladesh. There has been an influx of more than 700,000 refugees in only six months, and it is estimated that that there are now as many as 1 million in total, including the ones that had already settled there before 2017. Many of these refugees are forced to live in extremely harsh conditions every single day in refugee camps. AAR Japan has been giving assistance in the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar district, which is located in the southeastern part of Bangladesh.

In November 2017, we dispatched our emergency assistance team to Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. In collaboration with the local NGOs, AAR Japan distributed emergency relief supplies (non-food items) for the winter season. The following month, we set up a field office in Cox’s Bazar, and have since started our WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) projects, including the installment of latrines, bathing spaces and tube wells in the camps and host communities.

For a tranquil daily life of women and children

Since the historic influx of Muslim minority groups from Myanmar in August 2017, many sexual assaults and domestic violence cases have been reported in camps in Cox's Bazar. AAR Japan has operated protection facilities – a Woman Friendly Space (WFS) and a Child Friendly Space (CFS) – in the camps, to provide and support a tranquil daily life for women and children. Hundreds of women and children gather at WFS and CFS for study, play, and creative activity programs every week.
